Meet Kerlande

Kerlande Eugene's story is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and a deep-seated passion for health care. Her journey into medicine began during her high school years. Through her involvement in HOSA (Health Occupation Student of America), she discovered her calling to make a difference in the lives of others through health care.

Despite all I had been through, I believed there was a chance for something greater.

Road to Success

Kerlande's educational path took her to the University of South Florida (USF), where she participated in a transformative medical summer camp at NSU. This experience solidified her dedication to the field and set the stage for what was to come. After graduating from USF, Kerlande's commitment to health care led her back to Broward Health's Specialty Care Center, this time as a Ryan White Medical case manager. Her role involved providing essential support and care to individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, a responsibility she shouldered with compassion and dedication.

Not content with just one avenue of service, Kerlande expanded her impact by serving on Broward Health's National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day committee. Simultaneously, she worked as a crisis intervention and information/referrals counselor, further underscoring her commitment to helping those in need. Her passion for nursing grew, nurtured by a mentor's encouragement, eventually leading her to Broward College of Nursing, where she earned a scholarship.

Against All Odds

Kerlande's journey wasn't without its challenges. She faced academic setbacks and declined an acceptance offer from a well-known nursing school. However, these obstacles only fueled her determination to strive for greatness. Her unyielding faith, unwavering resilience, and the constant support of her family propelled her forward. Against the odds, Kerlande was accepted into the NSU College of Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner program, a feat she initially believed required a B.S.N.

As she navigated through the NSU F.N.P. program, Kerlande's dedication and commitment were recognized when she became a part of the Sigma Theta International Honor Society of Nursing. Her journey of growth and learning was further enriched when she received the CVS Health Foundation Scholarship. Throughout this academic journey, she had the privilege of being guided by the same medical professionals who had inspired her from the start.

Finding Her Way

Kerlande's story comes full circle as she envisions her future in health care. "The aim is to return to Broward Health to specialize in cardiology or continue serving underserved populations at Broward Health’s Specialty Care Center," said Kerlande. Her ultimate goal, however, extends beyond medical practice. It is a tribute to her late sister, a beacon of inspiration that drives her to advocate for those in need and serve with unwavering compassion.
